While NetApp keeps improving the front end that is ActiveIQ, for both pre-sales and support purposes, I constantly find myself going into the Classic AutoSupport and accessing the raw autosupport data; most often it’s sysconfig -a. Recently I was trying to explain the contents to a co-worker and I realized that I should just document it as a blog post. So here is sysconfig explained.
The command sysconfig -a is the old 7-mode command to give you all the hardware information from the point of view of ONTAP. All the onboard ports are assigned to “slot 0” whereas slot 1-X are the physical PCIe slots where myriad cards can be inserted. Here’s one example, I’ll insert comments as I feel it is appropriate.
This first section is some very basic info about the motherboard, it gives you the CPU, RAM and serial number as well as the IP address of the SP or BMC, depending on the model:
Backplane Serial Number: 012345678901 slot 0: System Board 2.0 GHz (System Board XX E0) Model Name: FAS8020 Part Number: 111-01099 Revision: E0 Serial Number: 012345678901 BIOS version: 9.3 Loader version: 5.3 SEQ CPLD version: 1.14 NVRAM CPLD version: 1.0 Processors: 6 Processor ID: 0x206d7 Microcode Version: 0x710 Processor type: Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2620 @ 2.00GHz Memory Size: 24576 MB Memory Attributes: Bank Interleaving Hoisting Channel Interleaving Chipkill ECC CMOS RAM Status: OK Controller: A PCIE Switch 0: id 0 8020 4.02 Service Processor Status: Online Firmware Version: 3.1.2P1 Mgmt MAC Address: 00:A0:98:A2:xx:0A Ethernet Link: up, full duplex, auto-neg complete Using DHCP: no IPv4 configuration: IP Address: 169.0.7.8 Netmask: 255.255.255.0 Gateway: 169.0.7.1 IPv6 configuration: Disabled
Here’s the rest of the onboard ports, as evidenced by the slot 0 reference. This first one is the external RJ-45 ports “Wrench” and “Locked wrench”, Wrench is a switch port that feeds e0M and the Service Processor (SP), Locked Wrench feeds e0P:
slot 0: Internal 10/100/1000 Ethernet Switch Firmware Version: Version2 SB_XX Switch0 Locked-wrench: auto-100tx-fd-up Wrench: auto-1000t-fd-up Device Type: 88E6176 memory mapped I/O base 0x0000000045f00000, size 0x20000 I/O base 0x0000000000003000, size 0x20 memory mapped I/O base 0x0000000045f20000, size 0x4000
Here’s the back of an 8020, you’ll see above the port covered in a black circle is a picture of a wrench, ie: “wrench port” and below that is port labelled with a wrench covered by a lock, ie: “locked wrench”.
While the SP Ethernet connection isn’t mentioned further, the two Ethernet ports viewable by ONTAP are indicated below. e0M is for management of the host and e0P is used in older versions of ONTAP to run ACP on the attached disk shelves:
slot 0: Internal 10/100/1000 Ethernet Controller e0M MAC Address: 00:a0:98:a2:xx:08 (auto-1000t-fd-up) e0P MAC Address: 00:a0:98:a2:xx:09 (auto-100tx-fd-up) Device Type: Rev 0 Firmware Version: 2.1 memory mapped I/O base 0x0000000046000000, size 0x20000 I/O base 0x0000000000004000, size 0x20 memory mapped I/O base 0x0000000046020000, size 0x4000
Here we have the two onboard 10Gbit, SFP+ based ports, e0a and e0b. You can see that they’re using TwinAx, you can even see the manufacturer of the SFP+ built into the TwinAx:

Here are the two CNA ports, e0c and e0d, both in 10Gbit mode, also using TwinAx. These two ports will come up again below:

There are two onboard, 1Gbit, RJ-45 ports, unused on this host:

Here is the NVRAM card, complete with battery status:

Here are the onboard SAS ports, with a sub-section for each port. Each port has four connections called “Phys”, numbered (0-3). The defintion of a Phy is:
Phy. Phys are part of the physical connection between SAS devices. Each phy contains a transceiver that sends data back and forth between SAS devices. Phys are internal, within SAS connectors.
Each port will show you the type of connector inserted which you can map to a cable type, the first one below (112-00178+A0) is a 5M SAS cable, it also show you a list of all drives connected to it. The XX.YY number at the start of each drive line is the shelf number (XX), then the drive number (YY) in the shelf. At the end, is the drive’s serial number, each serial number will appear twice in this output because it is connected via two ports. You’ll see the first drive below with serial YGH5M99A is also the first drive in the list connected to port A of card 1. Since there’s 24 drives per shelf in this example, I’ve only included the first two and last two drives from every shelf.
Here’s port A of the two SAS ports in slot 0 (onboard):

Now you can see the two onboard FC ports are unused, these are the same physical ports as the CNAs above, that’s why they have the same slot and port name 0c and 0d, the Ethernet profile of these ports are e0c and e0d. The FC ports below are unused because they are in use as pure Ethernet adapters above:

The next entry is the backplane connection between the two controllers in an HA pair, on this model it is InfiniBand, but can be other protocols on different platforms:

The final device onboard for this model is a USB-connected storage device for booting the platform, previous platforms used CF cards since they are IDE-native and new ones use .m2.

This platform (FAS8020) only has two PCI slots, this particular one only has a card in slot 1, a 4 port SAS card. You’ll find it displays all the same information as the onboard one above, and here’s where you’ll find drives repeating for their second path: Slot 1, port A:
